Knowledge Retention
North American organizations are at the front end of a crisis. Baby boomers, the largest workforce segment on the continent are now starting to retire taking with them years of accumulated knowledge, skills and process. Some organizations will be wrestling with as much as half of their workforce stepping out over the next decade.
There is no clear strategy that can replace these individuals. With very few exceptions companies have recognized manufacturing processes can be done equally efficiently and far less cost is one of shore. We have become a knowledge-based society. An estimated 70% - 90% of new jobs in North America will require a college degree over the next decade. Yet only 30% of 21-year olds will graduate from university. The knowledge gap is frightening.

This problem is more acute when it comes to the highly specialized field of geotechnologies. The need and demand for these skills is growing exponentially while the supply is, and will continue to lag, far behind. To further aggravate the situation geotechnologies cover an incredibly wide set of skills, technologies and systems. Only specialists in this field can fully recognize the background, education and training required to build and maintain a multi skilled organization. The only logical and practical answer is to establish an ongoing relationship and obtain the skills externally.

With 80% of current business decisions including some consideration of geotechnologies, nearly every major organization in North America and worldwide is going to need a strategy to wrestle with this problem. In fact this number is likely to grow based on web-based commerce. Organizations small and large have now become multinational. The web knows no geographic boundaries, but managing a business with international considerations can challenge even the most experienced management team.
